The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
